The Anna Stanley painting, Girl Carrying Sheaves, is currently on loan to the United States Embassy, The Hague.

Girl Carry Sheaves, circa 1895, was painted in Risjoord and will be displayed at Ambassador Fay Hartog Levin’s residence. The painting, part of a four city, international tour, Dutch Utopia, American Artists in Holland, 1880 – 1914, concluded at the Singer Museum, in Laren, on January 16, 2011.

Ambassador Levin attended the opening of the exhibition in Laren and learned that in July 1976, one of her predecessors, Kingdon Gould, had exhibited Stanley’s collected works, (twenty-six at the time) in The Hague, at the Congress Building, as part of the United States Bicentennial celebrations.   After the Bicentennial exhibition, the Stanley collection then moved to the Singer Laren Museum for about three weeks.

Dutch Utopia, which originated at the Telfair Museum of Art, in Savannah, Georgia, in September 2009, traveled to the Taft Museum of Art, in Cincinnati and the Grand Rapids Museum of Art, in Michigan, before arriving in Laren, in September 2010. Ambassador Levin hosted the participants of Dutch Utopia at her residence after the show opened in September.

The owner of Girl Carry Sheaves, Joanne Stanley Holbrook Patton, is also the granddaughter of Anna Stanley and was very pleased to have her grandmother’s painting grace the Ambassador’s home.

Showcasing more than seventy paintings from public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe, Dutch Utopia: American Artists in Holland, 1880-1914 explores the work of forty-three American artists drawn to Holland during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
